Why Is Paediatric Dentistry Important?

At Stella Maris Dental, we believe prevention is better than cure — especially when it comes to children. Our approach to paediatric dentistry starts early and grows with your child, helping them build positive dental habits and confidence for life.

Why is it important to bring your child to the dentist early?

Bringing your children to the dentist early has many benefits:

  • Helps them get used to the clinical environment, reducing anxiety.

  • Introduces good oral hygiene habits from an early age.

  • Offers parents helpful dietary advice to protect children’s teeth.

  • Encourages regular check-ups, which help prevent future dental issues.

What should I do when my child’s first teeth come through?

Start brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as they come through, and continue doing so until they can manage it themselves. This builds good habits and sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

When should my child visit a dental practice for the first time?

As soon as your child gets their first teeth, you should take them to the dentist. This helps them become familiar with the environment and makes dental visits a normal part of life.

What happens during my child’s early dental visits?

From 0–5 years, we focus on helping your child feel at ease. If they don’t open their mouth initially, that’s okay — just being in the environment helps. They can sit wherever they’re most comfortable, and we gently introduce them to the dental setting.

I'm scared of the dentist — will this affect my children?

Yes, children can pick up on your anxiety. Staying positive helps them form healthy attitudes about dental care. If you’re feeling nervous, consider bringing a partner or grandparent along for support and to help keep the atmosphere relaxed for your child.

Paediatric Dentistry By Age

As your child grows, so do their dental needs. Here’s what you can expect at different stages of their development.

Ages 6–11 (£12 per examination)

At this stage, adult teeth start to come in and we check for early signs of gum disease – which is becoming more common in children. We also begin assessing whether orthodontic treatment may be needed in the future.

Treatment costs are 50% of adult prices (e.g., a filling is £50.25 instead of £100.50).

Ages 12–18 (£20 per examination)

We support teenagers in taking responsibility for their oral health. As their independence increases, we help them make smart dietary choices and learn how to floss.

We also advise on mouthguards for contact sports to prevent injury.

Do you offer orthodontics for children?

Yes. We provide traditional fixed braces (metal or tooth-coloured) for issues like overcrowding or misalignment. These are often referred to Dr. Ashley Davenport, a leading expert with over 20 years at Stella Maris Dental.

Aligned teeth can improve chewing, speech, confidence and long-term oral health.
